His-story

UBN - United Biscuits Network...many great memories...and many great radio people worked there.

After cutting my teeth on mobile discos and hospital radio in the late 60's and early 70's, this is where it all started for me in 1973...if the late Adrian Love (son of bandleader Geoff Love) hadn't given me a job at UBN, I might still be working for my dad's plumbing and heating business in London and may never have seen the inside of a radio studio!

Although perhaps I should also be thanking his wife, Barbara, who heard my voice on an audition tape while she was cooking in the kitchen. She called through to Adrian and said, "That guy's voice sounds really nice!"

Adrian invited me in for a chat…and the rest, as they say, is history.

In the studio, the classroom and the clinic

In addition to being a respected radio presenter, I am also an experienced copywriter and commercials producer, winning Sony awards for Radio City in Liverpool and Radio Orwell in Ipswich. My writing and production skills have been used to create trailers, competitions, programmes and features for a variety of stations including BBC Radio One, Invicta Supergold, Two Counties Radio and BBC Radio Solent.

However, my expertise is not restricted solely to the radio studio - I am also a qualified and experienced EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher and, after teaching at a number of schools in England and Switzerland, had my own successful language school in Bournemouth. I'm now teaching online and via YouTube and TikTok!

Me and 'er indoors relocated to the Algarve in Portugal in 2015, where we also owned and ran a Chiropractic Clinic, so if I put my back out doing an energetic voiceover, my wife could sort me out!

We have recently moved to Gibraltar, where the production studio has now been unpacked and set up...and where we also plan to open another chiropractic clinic.

So, as you can see, I feel equally at home in the studio, the classroom and the clinic - between you and me though, I have to confess to loving radio and music just a little bit more than teaching the Present Perfect and Past Simple, or being clinic receptionist for the day when our usual lady is off sick!!

Away from all three 

• I like reading - my favourite authors are perhaps somewhat traditional - Agatha Christie and Charles Dickens
• Somewhere inside me is a book waiting to be published
• I like tenpin bowling - but I have to go some way to beating one of my son's bowling average - he plays for Team England
• My musical tastes are wide and varied, ranging from the close harmonies of the 1940's Andrews Sisters, the rock and roll classics of the 1950's, the pop songs of the 60's, the disco sound of Barry White and the production style of Abba in the 70's and the rock, pop and power ballads of the 1980's
• Somewhere inside me is a singer of love songs
